Careers

Careers Education is a crucial part of the school's curriculum. Careers for the 21st century will be changing and flexible.  Jobs are becoming more skilled, particularly in terms of technology.  However, employers are also expected to hire people on the basis of skills that are not necessarily specific to a particular job.  These skills include versatility, adaptability, problem-solving, communication and teamwork.

It is important that in careers, good provision is made from career information and guidance.

At Napier Girls' High School a well-resourced Careers Department with effective planning and management provides direction for many students in a wide range of study, training and employment fields.  Statistically our school has a strong record of students who gain University Entrance going on to degree study at various universities and polytechnics.

STAR

The STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource) is an important grant used by the school to meet the identified learning needs of senior students that cannot be catered for within the traditional school curriculum.  In particular, it is used to:

  • (i)  facilitate transition to the workplace for students, especially those intending to go straight into the workforce or those likely to leave school without any formal qualifications;
  • (ii)  provide or purchase tertiary-type courses which will better meet students' needs, which will motivate them to achieve, and which will facilitate their smooth transition to further education, training or employment.
  • (iii)  support students to explore career pathways, and help them make informed decisions about their schooling and future work or study.

Students identified as being likely to benefit from enrolling in a STAR funded course are expected to:

  • Have individual learning needs that can be best catered for using STAR funds.
